ark Booth, one of the excellent Lead Tutors at CAPSLOCK, is completing a gruelling 10,000 Km challenge for charity in 2021.

Having previously completed the Land’s End to John O’Groats 900 mile cycling challenge, Mark has decided to create and embark upon an even tougher challenge: the Twisted 10K. Mark is walking, running and cycling 10,000 kilometres this year, and supporting 4 charities with his endeavours.

The Twisted 10K Challenge

Many people are familiar with a “10K” meaning a 10 kilometre running or walking event. However, Mark wanted to establish a particularly difficult challenge and, in a moment of inspiration (or maybe madness), he came up with the concept of ‘twisting‘ this to 10,000 kilometres over the course of 12 months.

Just for some context, that’s roughly the distance from London to Cape Town in South Africa.

This is a huge undertaking which will require Mark to cover an average of over 27 Km (17 miles) every day for a year. Mark will be racking up the miles by completing a series of challenges across the UK, including five ultramarathons, hiking the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, and cycling the UK Coast to Coast and Hadrian’s Cycleway.

The biggest challenge of all will see Mark cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats, again. But this time, he’s completing the National 3 Peaks at the same time – he’ll climb Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis along the way.

The Charities

Mark is raising money for four charities throughout the Twisted 10K challenge, each of which have significance to him. He is aiming to raise £10,000 during the year – £1 for each Kilometre completed.

Macmillan Cancer Support

“Macmillan nurses, doctors and health professionals support people living with cancer through the provision of emotional, physical and financial support. I, like almost everyone, have had friends and family whose lives have been impacted by cancer. It’s vital that support is made available to each and every one that needs it.”

Help for Heroes

“Every day, men and women are forced to leave the Armed Forces as a result of physical or psychological wounds. Help for Heroes helps them to recover and move on with their lives. As a military veteran I have seen the benefits that can result from this support and want to help them to continue by lending them my backing.”

Alzheimer’s Research UK

“Alzheimer’s Research UK is the leading dementia and Alzheimer’s disease research charity with a vision of a world where people are free from dementia. To live a life under the cloud of Alzheimer’s is one of my biggest fears so I’m doing what I can to help them.”

SSAFA – The Armed Forces Charity

“SSAFA has been providing lifelong support to the British Armed Forces and their families since 1885. Military families, like mine, work tirelessly behind the scenes to support service personnel. It’s vital that they are cared for, too.”

The CAPSLOCK team are all very proud of Mark for this incredible undertaking, and will be supporting him the whole way. (Of course, we also think he’s totally lost the plot!)
