Thinking about a cybersecurity career? Feeling like an impostor? You’re not alone—here’s what you need to know.
So, you want to get into cybersecurity? You? With no technical background? No Computer Science degree? No IT experience?
Okay, maybe your aunt has asked you to fix her laptop a few times. Maybe you’ve even built your own computer. But does that even count?
If this sounds like something running through your mind as you sign up for CAPSLOCK, trust me—you’re not alone.
Feeling like you’re not capable, that you don’t have what it takes, or that you’re somehow "fooling" everyone into thinking you belong in cyber? Extremely common.
Pivoting into a new career is no easy feat, and cybersecurity can feel like an even steeper climb. That’s why, as part of the CAPSLOCK course, we provide 1:1 mindset coaching support—so you can tackle those confidence wobbles head-on and focus your energy on learning instead.
When impostor syndrome creeps in, remember this:
✅ You have nothing to hide, and you’re not fooling anybody.
You’re a career changer, retraining in something new. Of course, you don’t know everything yet—you’re not supposed to! You don’t have to convince anyone that you’re an experienced cybersecurity professional. You’re not… yet. And that’s OK.
✅ You have experience—just in a different area!
Your previous work, study, or life experiences have equipped you with valuable transferable skills—skills that, when combined with cybersecurity knowledge, curiosity, and a willingness to learn, make you a strong candidate for any cyber role. As part of the CAPSLOCK Careers curriculum, we’ll help you identify and leverage these skills.
✅ Plenty of cybersecurity professionals don’t come from a technical background.
At CAPSLOCK, you won’t be the exception—you’ll be the rule. Whatever you think you don’t have, maybe you don’t even need. 😊
My best advice? Embrace the beginner mindset.
Imagine walking into a dance class, having never danced before. You’ll be out of sync, you’ll step on a few toes, and you’ll feel absolutely ridiculous. But you’ll have fun—because you expected this from lesson one.
Approach your cybersecurity learning the same way. As time goes on, you’ll gain confidence simply by observing your progress. You’ll look back in amazement when, after a few months, those acronyms and technical terms that once seemed like a foreign language suddenly make sense.
If you’d like a “mindset check” before joining, feel free to reach out to cristina@capslock.ac—let’s chat about any doubts or concerns you have.
Looking forward to seeing you on the course!
