It is projected that half of our jobs will be replaced by AI, robots, and technology by 2025, according to the World Economic Forum. Ouch. Couple this with the fact that over 300,000 people were made redundant in 2020 due to COVID-19, and it’s clear to see we’re approaching an employment crisis. The pandemic has changed the world of work with far-reaching and potentially permanent effects, crippling certain industries which may never fully recover.
But it’s not all doom and gloom. Ironically, one sector which relies heavily on highly skilled human input is the technology sector itself. And seeing as we are becoming increasingly reliant on technology in all aspects of life, this means that a huge number of new technology-focused jobs are constantly emerging, and in high demand.
So, which careers won’t be usurped by our robotic overlords in the next decade? And more importantly, how can people re-skill to access those careers?
We’ve identified five technology career sectors which will be in huge demand over the coming years: Software Engineering, Data Science, Machine Learning & AI, Cloud Engineering, and Cyber Security.
Helping the UK workforce to re-skill in sectors like these is at the top of the Government’s agenda, especially in the wake of COVID-19. That is why they’ve decided to fund new approaches to adult education so people can re-skill in technology.

This is because the cyber security industry currently has a huge shortage of talent. There are many more cyber roles available than qualified cyber professionals to fill them. Secondly, rather than charging learners a tuition fee – which would be prohibitively expensive for many – Capslock learners have the option to attend the 16-week course and pay nothing up-front. Instead, Capslock require learners to pay back a percentage of their income after completing the course, but only if they land a job with a good salary.
The Financial Conduct Authority have backed Capslock to pilot this model in 2021. It’s known as an income share and it opens the door to people who need to re-skill but can’t afford huge up-front fees or traditional loan debt. Simple!
Enrolled learners will be in the online classroom for up to 30 hours per week, just like a full-time job. But there is a part-time option available, too. The idea is that you’ll learn workplace focused skills, not just academic theory. Add in career counselling, and the fact that Capslock doesn’t get paid until you get hired, it seems like a feasible, modern alternative to higher education. Take that, robots.

CAPSLOCK is a government-backed online learning academy that re-skills adult learners and kick-starts their cyber security careers with no up-front costs.
The course will focus on re-training people into cyber security professionals via a rigorous and revolutionary curriculum, which was designed by two former cyber security lecturers.
